Originally made of 10 shower curtains pinned together, KU's "Pay Heed" banner was created by seniors Michael Gentemann and Todd Gilmore for the 1988 home game against #6 Duke. With the help of some classmates the 35ft banner was painted and looped together by string to be draped over an Allen Fieldhouse catwalk.
With Assistant Athletic Director Floyd Temple's help, the students were able to hang the banner with permission for the game. After a heartbreaking OT loss Gentemann took the banner down lugged it back to his house.
With Danny Manning's last game approaching, the guys decided to hang it one last time. After a win followed by a run to the National Championship, Phog Allen's granddaughter asked Temple if the banner could become permanent at Allen Fieldhouse. The rest is history.
